Please welcome, Jessica, the hands behind Whimsical Monkey!
Please tell us a little about yourself, Jessica.
I started as a bellydancer and took a break from that to learn the art of henna. I made friends with jewelry makers at festivals I did henna body art at and it inspired me to try to make my own.
So what do you make?
I make earrings, necklaces, pendants, and bracelets because being a bellydancer. I love jewelry and I wanted to make a type of jewelry that could be worn with anything, even costuming. They are all hand-woven with either wire or embroidery threads and embellished with woven wire, feathers, or crystals.
I got started by learning basic weaving techniques with wire and embroidery thread and have watched and studied several tutorials. My inspiration is costuming for the performing arts. I am also a huge fan of the peacock.
I get my ideas from art, movies, blogs, and fellow jewelry making friends. I always look at something and think, “what if we make it this color, flip it this way, or try a different shape?” and then I turn it into a challenge for myself. My supplies are aluminum and colored wires in various gauges, beads, crochet cord, feathers, crystals, polymer clay, buttons, and anything else that catches my eye. I buy my supplies at JoAnn’s Crafts, Michael’s, and Hobby Lobby.
