Okay folks I need some help! If you have seen my Etsy Shop lately then you may have noticed that I am adding new products almost daily. My problem is that most of the sellers on Etsy have amazing pictures. Me…not so much. Now some of the pictures I have are professional quality. They were taken by a friend that was nice enough to lend me her time and it did take quite a bit of time considering the amount of work she put into it. She didn’t charge me a dime since she is awesome but I also don’t want to abuse our friendship by asking her to take more and more pictures of my stuff.
I did come across a professional photographer that does photos primarily for Etsy shops and their items. Yowzaa! The prices are just not what I can afford. I don’t know who would invest in something that expensive but I am sure that if your photos look like hers your items probably sell quick. I know that it would be a worthwhile investment…I just don’t have the funds and I know that a lot of crafters and shop sellers don’t.
So how do I make my pictures better? I know that the pictures are better when taken with natural sunlight so I try do that as much as possible.
What about backgrounds? What do you use? I take most of my pictures on my white craft table or against the wall which is an off-white color. I have a lot of fabric too that I can use but I worry about the colors clashing. I notice that most of the pictures on Etsy are taken against white backdrops so I try to stick to that.
Photo Props? The main reason I wrote this post. Since most of the items are wearable like hats, scarves and jewelry I know that it would be best for the pictures to actually show someone wearing them. I don’t like being in my pictures and taking pictures of myself isn’t the easiest thing to do. My husband did buy me a little tripod for my camera but it doesn’t really make taking pictures that much easier.
For my hats that aren’t white I use this Styrofoam head that I bought on Ebay for about $5.
For my crochet necklaces, I just bought this Black Velvet Necklace Display Stand from Hobby Lobby for $8.
I am wondering if I should invest is some mannequins to use for taking pictures. Or maybe I am thinking too much about this…let me know your thoughts please!
